Meet Dr. Colleen Horn

Road to Chiropractic

I am a native suburbanite! Growing up not 20 minutes from the office, I was heavily involved in soccer and music from a young age. I always felt the need to help people growing up. Whether it was at age 5, when I wanted to be a teacher, or at 12 when I thought a career in the Peace Corps would be noble, I knew my future lay in service to others. I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign studying Psychology, yet had no real direction in my path. I decided Human Resources would be the smart decision and focused my academics to that career. It wasn’t until my mom was in a car accident my junior year of college and sought out the help of a chiropractor that I truly found my passion. I remember walking out of the “Health Talk” asking myself why every child isn’t adjusted the day they were born! Everything I heard seemed so logical and common sense. In fact, that night, I changed my classes for the next semester to start prerequisites for chiropractic school. The rest, as they say, is history!

A Passion for Working with Children

I decided to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic, in Davenport, IA to continue my education. I already had my heart set on working with children, so I immediately involved myself in clubs that had a pediatric focus. Throughout my three years at Palmer, I worked as a Pediatric and Physical Diagnosis Teaching Assistant and was part of the women’s soccer team. Trying to make the most of the time I had, I began working on my pediatric certificate, through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and would travel back home to the Chicago area once or twice a month to complete my weekend seminars. I truly enjoyed fine-tuning my skills and will be completing my certification soon.

Before I started my internship, I went on a clinic abroad trip to Manaus, Brazil where I was able to adjust many children with a plethora of ailments. One of the most memorable moments from Brazil is when I gave a little 8-month-old baby his first adjustment. We visited an orphanage for children with special needs, whose parents could not afford to care for them. The only thing I knew about little Leo was that he had a G-tube, or a feeding tube in his belly, and he was developmentally delayed. When Leo got his adjustment and power turned on, he gave me he biggest smile that melted my heart. I wholeheartedly love being able to develop bonds with children without the need for words. Being able to see his and so many others’ light burn brighter confirmed everything I had been working so hard to attain. I think fondly of little Leo and hope he is thriving as his constant reminder confirms my passion.

Further Education and Memberships

While I learned the Webster technique and how to care for pregnant mothers in my pediatric training, it wasn’t until I went through my own pregnancy that I really developed an appreciation for everything that a pregnant woman goes through physically and emotionally. Mothers are strong! Our bodies were intelligently designed for the beautiful process of birth; something our ancestors have been doing for thousands of years. All we need to do is listen to our hearts and we will know exactly what to do for ourselves and our children. I am determined to make it the standard that every mother, child, and family get adjusted. My WHY is that big!

I am also a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), International Chiropractic Association (ICA), and the Illinois Prairie State Chiropractic Association (IPSCA).
